- Are there any guidelines for storage of vaccines?
Vaccine life varies so follow the NPA, The Royal Pharmaceutical Society
of Great Britain or manufacturers guidelines.
The
NPA represents over 90% of community pharmacies and recommends that
fridges for the storage of vaccines must meet the following criteria:
- Should only be used for the storage of pharmaceutical
products and medicines, which require refrigeration.
- Maintain the stored pharmaceuticals within the temperature
range +2°C and +8°C
- Have a means of indicating the temperature of the products
stored in the refrigerator
- Have the means of recording the maximum and minimum
temperature in the refrigerator
- Are there any guidelines for the spacing of vaccines in pharmacy cabinets?
An air gap must be maintained between containers to allow cool air
circulation; also warm products should be allowed to cool before being
placed into the cabinet. The NPA and vaccine manufacturer’s guidelines
should be followed where available.
- How often should I monitor the temperature in my pharmacy cabinet?
The National Pharmaceutical Association (NPA) recommends the operating temperature range of pharmacy cabinets should be monitored at regular intervals. Good practice would be to check and record the maximum/minimum temperature in the cabinet on a daily basis and re-set the temperature recordings.
- Why should a customer incur the extra expense of buying a professional pharmacy, ward or laboratory fridge when domestic refrigeration is cheaper?
Domestic refrigeration operates wider temperature parameters, typically
between -2 to +12°C. Lec Medical pharmacy refrigerators operate
strictly between +2 to +8°C, adhering to the guidelines set by The
Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) for the storage
of medicines at low temperatures. The electronic controller displays
the current sample temperature as well as allowing the maximum/minimum
temperature to be read since the last re-set. All models are lockable
and have an audible and visual alarm facility. Most products can be
connected through supplied jack connectors to a remote powered alarm
system. As vaccines are very expensive, if they were ever destroyed due
to refrigeration failure some insurance companies may not pay
compensation for vaccines kept in domestic refrigeration units.
Ward
refrigerators maintain between +1 to +5°C, and provide an external
visual display of the current air temperature. Locks are fitted as
standard; they have forced air cooling and are fully compliant with the
latest food hygiene regulations.
Lec Medical laboratory products
are spark free to reduce the risk of internal explosions whereas
domestic refrigeration is not. These products are also fitted with
locks as standard to prevent unauthorized access.
- Why is ambient (surrounding air) temperature important?
Because you cannot destroy heat, only move it, we are taking unwanted heat from inside the cabinet and moving it to the condenser on the outside of the cabinet. Therefore the air surrounding the cabinet affects the efficiency and the performances.
- How long should a cabinet be allowed to stand after transportation?
This depends on how the cabinet is transported. Wherever possible the cabinet needs to be kept upright. When they are transported in an upright position it is advisable to let them stand for approximately 2 hours to settle.
If this is not possible and the cabinet is laid down, then it needs to stand for at least 8 hours (preferably overnight) in order for the compressor oil to settle back past the reed valves. Failure to allow this time can lead to the reed valves being damaged causing the compressor to fail.
- Lec BloodBanks
The
Lec Medical range
of bloodbank refrigerators are designed for use in small, medium and
large blood centres, hospitals, nursing homes, laboratories and
operating theatres.
Our bloodbank refrigerators offer safe, reliable, cooled blood
storage by using an electronic temperature controller with digital
display for temperature monitoring as well as an alarm system that
activates upon higher or
lower temperatures.
The bloodbank doors are highly durable as they are made using
anodised aluminium in conjunction with high strength glass. For hygiene
reasons the doors have chromate alloy handles encased in plastic that
also means they
are easy to clean. Electric heaters have been built-in to prevent
condensation formation and the doors are fully lockable to ensure that
the blood is secure.
Drawers
The bloodbank refrigerators have stainless steel drawers that
have
been designed to allow for sufficient air circulation within the
cabinet. Stainless steel sliding glides and plastic wheels ensure that
the drawers are easy to manoeuvre. The content of the drawers is easy
to see as the fronts are made from clear plexiglass, helping to
maintain temperature stability even when the door is opened. In
addition, the drawers are fitted with label holders to specify drawer
content and assist with stock management.
Cooling System
The cooling system is completely sealed within the lower part
of the
compact models and in the upper part of the larger models. The
effective design of the cooling system means that efficient cooling is
achieved through a fan-blown cooling evaporator coil, whilst compressor
noise is minimised.
Internal Lighting
A fluorescent light is fitted inside the bloodbank
refrigerators with a switch on the front panel.
- Lec Pharmacy
Pharmacy
Pharmaceutical
stock must be stored correctly, especially in relation to those
medicines which require storage at low temperatures. The Royal
Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) requires the following
guidance to be complied with relating to storage of medicines at low
temperatures:
Storage
Refrigerators used for pharmaceutical stock must be capable of
storing products between +2°C and +8°C.
They
must be equipped with a maximum and minimum thermometer which is
checked each day the pharmacy is open and the maximum and minimum
temperatures are recorded.
In addition to this, the National Pharmaceutical Association
(NPA) recommends the following:
Do not open the door for prolonged periods. Always ensure the
door is closed firmly after use.
Do not overstock the fridge. Clean the refrigerator regularly.
Temperature Control
The Lec Medical pharmacy refrigerators maintain an internal
temperature between +2°C and +8°C and the external digital temperature
controller continuously monitors the minimum and maximum temperatures.
An audio-visual alarm will also activate if the temperature
deviates outside of the set parameters for more than 15 minutes.
Forced-air Cooling
All of Lec Medical’s range of pharmacy fridges has forced air
cooling to ensure temperature stability and rapid temperature recovery
after door openings.
Security
All of the pharmacy refrigerators are fully lockable and are
provided with two keys preventing any unauthorised access. Some of the
larger models now include an open door sensor which alerts users that
it has been left open.
- Lec ward refrigerators
Ward
Our
ward refrigerators are designed specifically for ward use and offer the
safe and reliable storage of fresh food and beverages. With hygiene of
extreme importance, all of our ward refrigerators conform to the
requirements of Food Hygiene Regulations by maintaining an internal
temperature of between +1°C and +5°C.
Efficiency
Forced air cooling on all models provides optimum temperature
stability and rapid temperature recovery after door openings. Fully
automatic defrosting takes away the need for manual involvement.
